Traditional asymmetrical design

Although my personal preference goes toward contemporary designs, I also like from time to time, to create more traditional western designs. I'm planning on taking the AIFD certification next year that will happen in Las Vegas, so I need to know my classics...

Here is an asymmetrical design on a urn-shaped vase. I love the use of scented geranium leaves that adds so much texture and fragrance to any composition. The larkspur creates a soft and airy line that instantly brings me to a wild flower field in summer.

Organic Easter design

This week, for my Creativity & Competition class, we had to develop a design around the concept of food & taste. I decided to build an intriguing structure I saw in a past edition of Fusion Flower magazine (British publication). The design was created by Baudouin Roelants, a great floral master from Belgium. This is the first time I was building a structure from scratch, so I was pretty excited...

The structure is based on copper mesh wire, covered with spanish moss. To give it a very organic design, I glued individual pieces of lichen which took me at least two hours... but the result was really stunning to me. My idea was to use quail eggs as my food ingredient, and have the structure mimic in its way, the visual texture of the eggs. Repetition is a strong concept in floral design!



For the flower part, I also wanted to create a contrast in color. I selected white ranunculus with a mix of purple blooms: anemones and statice. I also added a touched of yellow (solidaster), to make the purple stand out even more. I love how this design turned out and I can proudly say, that this is one of the most interesting design I ever made... until the next one of course.

This is one thing I love about floral design, is that we always expand into more and better. How fun is life when we do what we love...
